My Uncle said once it get's a little warmer weather (maybe) we'd go out to Lake Conroe and go fishing, and Lake C gotta bunch of cats in it. I mostly just do the small creek and pond our property which is primarily bass and perch. What's the best lure for catfish? I know you can use Shad, and chicken livers etc. but is there a lure they really like, kind of like a crank bait? Sorry if this is a stupid question . I don't have a lot of experience fishing for cats. Thanks.

We never really use any active lures when fishing for cats in AZ so I can't help you much, but we catch them on chunked up anchovies, chicken parts stinky stuff like that fairly regularly. The serious guys that fish for the big flathead cats catch carp and blue gill and run them on heavy rigs to keep them near the bottom as live bait.

My experience with catfishing leads me to believe that they hunt by smell more than sight. Therefore traditional lures aren’t effective. I use shrimp or bloodbait on a sponge.
I put the weight on the end of the line and tie the leader of the hook on the line about a foot up from the end.
Good luck!

The guys around here that are going for the biggest fish use a technique called “noodling”. It involves diving in areas with steep banks or where there is rubble or brush under water. They are looking for holes or lairs where the big fish nest. Once they find a hole or nest, they stick their arms in until the fish attacks. Then they pull the fish out and wrestle it to the surface. I have seen 40-50 lb catfish caught in this manner. But it has also taken the lives of a few guys from our area.

Depends on what type of cat you’re after. Channels will hit about anything and will sometimes hit a crank bait but not very often. Dead lining Minnows, cut bait, shrimp, dough balls, chicken liver etc will catch the channels way better than any artificial lure. Big blues and flatheads prefer live bait like shad, suckers and bluegills and will be around trees and drop offs close to shallow water.

Papa whack and I used to do a ton of cat fishing Ohio river Tennessee river lake Marion and moultrie in the South Carolina and unless you’re going after monster flatheads the best bait we’ve used is Docs. Get their worms that go with it. www.docscatfish.comI don’t think big live bait can be topped for monster flatheads but you can catch flatheads no problem on this stuff too. You’ll want the blood added type for flatheads. Also if you are using blood added bait there’s a brand hog wild that works well too. We primarily went after channels and blues though

I’m deeply offended by that statement..... after a week in the woods hunting I’d make as good of a stinkbait as any that our friend P listed!
