Once AGAIN, here I am trying to get a thread back on track after someone else hijacks it and I'm pretty sure that I will be blamed! So what are you looking for in a knife? Have you ever used an ulu? Own one. Tried but couldn't get used to the feel.

As a custom knife maker, I cut my teeth on O1 tool steel. Its still my favorite. D2 would be 2nd favorite tool steel. What are the properties that you find in O1 and D2 that make them your favorites? Its bullet proof. You cant screw it up. you can heat treat it over and over with no warp. Its tempers easy in a toaster oven and quenches in regular veg oil. IT produces a great harness and holds an edge like none other. Sure it will rust but stainless is too soft and gummy for my tastes so I like carbon steel. AND IT CHEAP AND EASILY AVAILABLE!

Yes but only as tool steel for making products and not knife blades but it would make a great knife blade. It rusts very easily. In fact, it can be stained or etched with plain vinegar. For The new drop away rest I'm designing, I spec'd 1095 for the launcher tongue but it will be coated with black zinc to stave off rust.

But if it was easy to work that might not be a bad trade off.

Have you ever used an ulu? Own one. Tried but couldn't get used to the feel. I brought a couple back from Alaska , but they have been use as decorative items ever since. I picked one up a few days ago that I’ll try out on a critter next chance I get. It sharpened up nicely........but I’m like you, I don’t know if I could get the hang of it. That gal on “The Last Alaskans” sure knows how to swing one!

Ive made ulus, Ive owned ulus for years. Its when they are too sharp that they are a problem (seem counter intuitive) They make great pizza cutters and hide scrapers.

Nice! And nice steel. I like my CPM154 blades, take a Stone well and hold. Rockwell is a factor as well
