If you can find one that is not way over priced (((Doug Camp))) made some of the best box calls I have ever laid eyes on...or ears on for that matter

I’d go with either a box call and/or a pot type to start. The box is fairly ez to run and a pot takes a little practice but is still not too hard.
The Lynch World Champion and Foolproof boxes are still two of the deadliest calls out there and are easy to find. As far as a pot call, I prefer glass over slate because it doesn’t need as much care to sound good and not squeak. Pick something. There’s so many it’s hard to say one is better than the other.
You don’t need a $100+ call to bring in a bird. The main thing is the rhythm. Even if you can’t make it sound perfect you’ll do ok if you get the rhythm down. Learn to do basic yelps and start there. There’s a lot of turkeys out there that could never win a calling contest.
A place a lot of newbies get in trouble and don’t have a clue they’re ruining their morning is trying to do a cluck. Clucks probably the easiest thing in the turkey vocabulary to learn and most people are happy they can make a turkey sound with their new calls so they sit there and cluck away. BUT....Unless you continue on into a series of yelps or a cutting run most clucks sound like an alarm putt and will put every bird in hearing distance on alert. Stay away from just doing one or two clucks by themselves.
This is just a general rule and I’ll admit that sometimes it takes getting aggressive to get a gobbler fired up but until you learn how to judge what a bird wants, DONT OVER CALL. If you get a response, just shut up. Once he answers he pretty much knows where you are. He’ll either come or he won’t. If you call too much he’ll just think your a horny hen and wait you out. If he doesn’t want to come in you can call your head off and it won’t do any good.
If you’re hunting open areas like crop fields then a decoy will come in handy. I prefer using both a Jake and hen. If using just a hen there’s more chance a bird will hang up out of range and wait on her to come to him. The Jake is more likely to make him close the distance.
If you’re woods hunting. The decoy isn’t nearly as effective since they can’t be seen as well. When I used to gun hunt birds I rarely carried a deke. Once a bird decides to come in, he has the sound of your calls pretty much pinpointed and will generally come into gun range.
One last thing. It’s going to be fun. But be prepared to get pissed when one sneaks in from behind you and catches you moving or spots you blinking and then putts and runs away. Lol!

(And as far as words go...….. it's really good advice!)

Oh, 1 more thing.
BE PATIENT!!! If you know there’s birds around but haven’t heard any gobbles, don’t be too quick to pick up and move.
Every turkey hunter has the same stories of how they moved over to the next ridge only to have a bird start gobbling exactly where they just came from. Or, the worst one is, just getting things packed up and taking 2 steps and busting out a bird who was coming in silent.

P is correct less calling more patience tends to make for a better turkey hunter. Is it as exciting as just getting em to talk back to you all morning? Prolly not at the time but kill more birds birds and that’s exciting
