Does anyone here use an AR for whitetail, elk, etc?? I didnt see anyone talking guns...and wasnt surprised. But I still wondered about this anyways. I have three AR's. Two are 5.56, the third is 308. If I still hunted with guns , I would love to use one of these. I bought the 5.56 for coyote, but the 308 caliber is great for larger animals, imo. Anyone agree, disagree, or just dont care? LOL

I have three right now, usually that's about what I have. Always seem to trade or sell one to build another or pick one up and so on. I built a 18" 556 for coyotes, range shooting, other varmint...might try it on some coues or antelope. I have an SBR 300BLK, well SBR paperwork is with the ATF right now. And a 16" 300 BLK. I just got a 30cal suppressor so after I get everything setup the way I want I'll put it to work hunting. We can use suppressors and full mags to hunt here.
I've wanted to build a 308 for range work and just to have, but for hunting I don't really want one. 308s tend to be quite heavy and a lot of them seem to have reliability issues (a lot of that might just be internet though). For the big game I just like to grab my Rem 700 300rum and let it get the job done if I'm not using my bow.

*addition - I've always wanted to take out my M1 Garand (30-06) or PTR 91/HK G3 clone (308) on a hunt. Both are pretty stout rifles though also.

I guess it's really how much the weight bothers you, because most ar10 rifles with a scope are around that 11LB mark, loaded with full mags they can get another LB, but that isn't necessary, where you can build a light bolt action coming in at 6. The bolt action I normally use is still pretty stout so the difference wouldn't be that much for me.
For me it would really depend on the type of hunting I was going to be doing, if your going out to shoot some hogs or something similar on flat land it would be great, but on a mountain elk or deep coues deer hunt I would grab something else.

I don't have any ARs right now but have 5 80% lowers coming for some builds. First couple will be .223 or .204 for prairie dog shootin.
I would also like to build an AR10 in .300 blackout and .308
Friend of mine just built one in 6.5 grendel. He has close to 10 ARs now.

That's the beauty of the cartridge, you use an ar15 lower, parts, upper, gas...just needs the 30 cal barrel to lob those babies out of. 6.5 grendel is a mean round, I was thinking about building one of those for hunting and a 458 or 50 beowulf for giggles.
