This thread was blank so I thought I would get it started and seek some more sagely advice from you gents. I recently have been interested in picking up fly fishing, my uncle is an avid fly fisherman and my sister is pretty good also. I recently went into an Orvis store and talked to a couple guys there and they said they fly fish for bass early and late season when they are in the shallows. I think it sounds pretty awesome but don't have a real idea where to start.
Uncle and the guys at the shop said start with a 7 or 8 weight rod and use 300 or 400 grain sinking line and showed me a couple flys they use. Any idea on what kind of tippet/leader to use? Anyone else tried fishing this way and have any pointers?

As far as Bass I never have tried but Trout that's the way to go match the hatch and you will catch more Trout the you could imagine haven't done it in years but I do remember how good it could be a friends father showed me the ropes he was one of the best at it that I ever knew he would just pull one fish after another , be prepared to learn how to tie flies also its just part of the game that makes it great, good luck as far as bass I would say a 4 or 6 Lb tippet.

Sometimes we just run 9' leader of whatever depending on species. Fishing wet cortland 333 sink is hard to beat. You can always add tippet to go down to whatever. Oh and learn the Triple Surgeon knot it's easy and it's money Tapered leader helps lay the fly out in a natural state, wet fishing or sink it doesn't matter so this why I do it that way for K.I.S.S and less expensive

Also learn a good slip knot for fly, not always needed but can add action to your fly especially for bass species
