As you guys now know i had a break into my home and all my guns were stolen. The 12 gauge Francia was nice but i never used it so no great loss. my Marlin semi auto .22 i hated with a vengence, also no great loss my custom made 7.57 fortunatly now lives with my son. The two collectable pump action winchesters (very old) will be mourned but cant replace them. The one rifle i used a lot for head shooting fallow deer for meat, is probably the only one i will replace . And this is where you guys can help, i need to find a replacement for it. I dont want another 5mm Remington magnum. Good as it was, it is now obsolete, cant get the ammo and if i do come across any, it costs moon beams. Stan sugested a 204. Allthough i have never had anything to do with that cal, my friend has one and he has said the same as Stan ,they are hot and flat shooting and the ammo is no problem a great little rifle. While its on my thought list, i am thinking it may be a little too hot for the restricted area that i now hunt in. One question i have is, has there been any records of burnt out barrels. The closest cal i can find to my 5mm is the 17hmr. This is faster and flater than the 5mm, is a rimfire. With readily available ammo. This is high on my list at the moment. I dont want a .22 mag, (dont like their accuracy) All the 22s are brobably a little hot and not really needed. So guys go for it, all sugestions will be gratefully recieved. This is a form of healing for me and i want to emerse myself in a little self indulgence.
The other question is what sort of optics. I had only just fitted a very expensive Zeiss 4-12x50 scope to the 5mm. I fully intend placeing a very good scope on this new rifle. I need good light gathering for late evening hunting (no time restrictions here) Once again any educated advice will be greatfully recieved. Of course cost does come into it eg The real top end scopes will be outside my ability to buy (i have a wife lol) Also remember over here we pay double to what you guys pay, exchange rate, custom charges plus tax etc
So guys please help me in my healing process and lets get into a good debate.

I believe the Tikka is a good rifle. But in my hunting area i think any of the .22s are a bit of an over kill. What about medhigh priced scopes?any ideas?

the zeiss terra was the scope i had only just a few months ago attached to my 5mm. However i must say it was inferior quality to the usual Zeiss standard. Maybe i had aquired a bit of a lemon. If i do go with Zeiss it will be the next model up at twice the price. I have thought of the Leupold but i have heard their standards have slipped over recent yrs. I do know they used to be good. I have never heard of the Meopta but will look them up.

If your willing to spend enough to get into a Zeiss conquest, then check out the Lecia ER 5 as well.

Have you looked at the .17 Remington caliber? They’re not cheap rounds off the shelf. I have a buddy who reloads for me but retail here is $30.00 for 20.
Very flat shooting round, 4,000 FPS from the nozzle. For the money Zeiss’ Conquest is a very good scope.

George i had a custom made 17 ackley improved it was a wildcat necked down from the .22 hornet. A lovely round but a bit of a pain to reload. The barrel burnt out after only 3-400 rounds, prob my fault loading it hot to get max accuracy. I got rid of it. Decided i will stick to factory rounds. Be it center fire or rim fire. At the moment i have dialed down the choice to Stans recommendation of the 204. Reading up on it, most people are getting 25-3000 rounds through it before the barrel needs replacing. Or the 17hmr which is a hot little rimfire with a long life using factory ammo. Ammo price must be taken into account also. The 204 works out at around 1$ per round not sure what the price of the 17 Remington. The 17hmr works out a 80cents per round
Because of the deer habits here they tend to come out just on dark and i was dissapionted with the entry level Zeiss terra it was usless at gathering in the light in dark conditions. So i have made my mind up to get a very good scope and $$$$ the price ..........................I can say this with complete confidence knowing Jan will never read this lol. In all your wild glob trotting couldnt you bring a top scope over here and toss it out of the window as you fly over head, lol. Thanks for your sugestions George much appreciated

How big are these deer that 22 cal is over kill? Sorry, i was not referring to the 22s as an over kill for the deer, but meaning the area and distance of shot. You see all my shooting is done within 100yrds and mostly 50 or less, thats why i simply head shot the deer. But i also may on a very rare occasion need to strech out. found the little 5mm mag did all this without disturbing game and near by farms too much. But nw fiind myself second guessing what i intend doing with this new gun, so thats why i am enjoying all the input from all you ,more experianced guys

I think that has been tried before without a lot of success, but could be worth a try. One of the scopes trial mentioned that has my interest is the sworos z3. It looks to be light and compact and reasonably priced. Have you or anyone else on the forum got any knowledge about it. I was wondering that with the 1inch tube it might no be so good in the near dark?

Ray you might want to consider the leupold vari X6 it has a 30 MM tube and excellent low light capability . also the monarch 5 from nikon with the low light lens

I have a question, and in so asking will prove my ignorance of vari powered scopes. When i had the 4-12 Zeiss Terra, i found every time i made a big adjustment to the power i had to re focus the scope. EG if i focused in at max vari power, when i reduced to say 7-8 i had to refocus. Going down to 4-5 i had to refocus again and the same in reverse. I found this to be a real pain in the butt. I never had to do that on a cheap 3-9 power scope yrs ago, so why this on "so called" upper priced scope like the Zeiss. Is this normal or did i get a lemon?
This is a serious question as when i buy a replacement scope its something i would prefer to avoid if poss.
