I just traded some work for a brand in in the box Tikka T3 lite in 7mm Rem mag. I also have a Zeiss conquest that bought right I am mounting on it... I don't gun hunt any more so I was going to let me dad use it this fall on our moose hunt. Save him the hassle of flying to NY with a firearm.
Here is my question...I looked and I have two boxes of 162 grain Hornady interlocks in 7mm mag..while I don't think they would be my first choice for moose ...I am think they will work? Anyone have any experience with them?

IMO that round will easily drop a moose of any size. About 10 yrs ago, I shot my Idaho elk with a 300 RUM using a 150 gr bullet. Went 10 ft and dropped.
7mm is a very popular hunting round here with lots of guys shooting Sierra's 168 gr HPBT.

Thanks GK, I think I will sight them in and see how they look. If they shoot well then he can use them. I haven't really bought rifle ammo in so long I was surprised at the price ...it's nothing to be up near 50 a box for something with premium bullets.

The 162 Interlocks are a very good bullet Trials. That combo should be just fine on moose, Trials.

Hopefully they shoot well out of it and dad nails a moose. I've had very good success with Hornady's as to being very accurate. I've used the SST's on whitetails and they have done the job very well. The tougher Interlocks would be a much better bullet for moose.

I had a 7mm mag that I just sold this past winter. I bought it a few years ago and never shot anything but coyotes with it lol. I started back into archery at that time. I think I was shooting nosler partions and they grouped well for me. I'm positive 160 grain will be more than enough for that moose. My old man has nailed quite a few with his 308 and never had an issue.

I'm a little late to this party but I think you are going to be fine with any of the more well know expanding type bullets (interlock, accubond, partitions...etc) I would stay clear of bergers though. I used to shoot bergers and love their accuracy and they are devastating on smaller game but the bullets tended to basically explode (fragment) without much penetration. It was always fine on mule deer down, I never had an issue but I would personally be a bit skeptical on moose. I had friends use them on elk and they were one shot drops though also, so maybe I just think about it to much.

Yea, I am sticking with the interlocks providing the shoot expectable. They seem to have decent reputation. I have another box coming as well...so hopefully three boxes gets the gun sighted in with enough to spare for the hunt. I most likely am going to sell the gun shortly after this hunt. I really don't need it. In fact I should sell about a dozen rifles and go on a sheep hunt.

post em up, you can probably unload some of them here. Tikka T3 is a good rifle, and 7mm is an all around cartridge. You might want to hang on to that one.

Well the rifle is in. Looks good. Turns out he sent me the new 2016 model T3X, has some update to the original ...some nice features like a better recoil pad. The down side it no longer comes with rings ..so I ordered two set of tallys...med and low. I am dropping it off to get mounted, squared and laser bore sited. Hopefully I can get this finished in the next couple weeks.

I don't see why you should have any issue with the 162's trial is say they will do the trick
