So... Four of us Northern NYers have decided we are going elk hunting 2021.We have discussed it for years but actually started a group savings account this time.lol...Before we get any older (around 50 now).
I'm fishing for opinions/advice. I'm leaning towards 3rd-4th week of Sept for archery. Unguided, but possibly a drop camp.. My thoughts are that we would make this a regular thing every other year or so. This won't be a once in a lifetime trip. We dont want to spend $5000+ on 1 trip Nothing is set in stone. I like the idea of hunting during the rut, but maybe we would be more successful with our guns(only 1/2 of us are really into archery). Are there areas where you can drive in on forest rds etc..with a truck or Utv and set up a base camp?..I see some outfitters offering hunting on 5-10000 private acres usually adjoining public land that have cabins for base camps..Any and all advice is welcome..

Couple of things.
Tags are going to be your limiting factor.... you only realy options are CO and Idaho. Maybe WY but you each will need three years of points for general tags. Yes you can find places to jist drive in and camp thats no problem.. Drop camping maybe an option however between that and tag it will eat up that budget very quick.

Maybe if we could decide this spring we would start applying and getting preference points for other states..I'm sure maybe we are overthinking it.Maybe for the 1st trip we will just pick a piece of public and wing it and base our next trips off what learn.. In that case maybe we dont wait until 2021..

I'm that guy that always shoots his buck in the gorge, or over 4 hills and 3hrs from the truck or in the middle of the swamp.. I'm not sure how many more years my friends will stick with me if I can find a worse location to pack/drag something out of..

" Creek." It's named that because it is a "" to get into and even more of a to get out of and that's only if you don't shoot something! .

That's all I have and yes we had to use it more than once.

I just saw that our site cleans up the word B I T C H. That is the name of George's favorite creek.
Although come to think of it...… the first night that I hunted with Ray down in New Zealand,
the hole where that first fallow deer died might have been real close to the proverbial "B I T C H CREEK!"

You wont have to worry about swamps at George's basin but better bring your climbing gear. It's a beautiful basin to look at, pretty flat and covered in trees which hide the bulls but you can sure hear them bugle. Now to the bad part you can stand on the road over looking the basin, toss a rock over the side and count to 10 before it hits the bottom !!!
