George i had a custom made 17 ackley improved it was a wildcat necked down from the .22 hornet. A lovely round but a bit of a pain to reload. The barrel burnt out after only 3-400 rounds, prob my fault loading it hot to get max accuracy. I got rid of it. Decided i will stick to factory rounds. Be it center fire or rim fire. At the moment i have dialed down the choice to Stans recommendation of the 204. Reading up on it, most people are getting 25-3000 rounds through it before the barrel needs replacing. Or the 17hmr which is a hot little rimfire with a long life using factory ammo. Ammo price must be taken into account also. The 204 works out at around 1$ per round not sure what the price of the 17 Remington. The 17hmr works out a 80cents per round Because of the deer habits here they tend to come out just on dark and i was dissapionted with the entry level Zeiss terra it was usless at gathering in the light in dark conditions. So i have made my mind up to get a very good scope and $$$$ the price ..........................I can say this with complete confidence knowing Jan will never read this lol. In all your wild glob trotting couldnt you bring a top scope over here and toss it out of the window as you fly over head, lol. Thanks for your sugestions George much appreciated I have made bad error in priceing these rounds eg the 204, 22.250 and 223 are all around $40-$50 per pkt of 20= $2-$2,50 per round. The 17hmr works out at $25-$30 per box of fifty =50c -55c per round.

Have you looked at the .17 Remington caliber? They’re not cheap rounds off the shelf. I have a buddy who reloads for me but retail here is $30.00 for 20. Very flat shooting round, 4,000 FPS from the nozzle. For the money Zeiss’ Conquest is a very good scope. Would that be a 17 Fireball, George?

I have heard a little bit different things about the .204, Ray. Barrels are burning out a little faster than 2-3000 rounds, more like in the 1-1.5k range. Extremely accurate round but one that eats barrels. I would stay with either the .223 or .22-250.

Would suit me here at closer shots and bunny shooting down south where they are in their thousands. could run off 3-500 rounds per day. A few days of that sort of shooting and no barrel? . $$$$ i was starting to go down that road.

Couple pictures below; Left is a .223, right .17

Very popular over for their long range rabbit shooting. Ammo is not cheap though approx $2.50 -$3.00 per round. Buy 500 rounds and it works out $1250-$1500. Wheew that a lot of money for perhaps a weekend of hard Rabbit shooting

Which one? I have both the .270 wsm and the .300 wsm but for your hunting, both have way more recoil than you need to deal with. I'd say that for your hunting needs Ray, a .243 is all you would ever need and I'm really still in the 22-250 camp.

Lanny i am referring to the wsm rimfire. Its Winchesters answer to the 17 hmr. Its made from the necked down .22 magnum shell. It seems to out perform the 17hmr in speed and tragetory etc. But i have a faint recollection someone on here was not very complimentary about it.If there is a problem i would like to know now, I am still looking at all options

I talked to a guy shooting the .17 wsm. He said it was very good. Lots more power than the hmr. Only problem is the selection of rifles isn’t great and ammo isn’t all that common.

Wouldn't you want something a little bigger to be shooting deer? Especially if taking longer shots?
As for scope I have a 3-9 leupold on an AR15 I have for hog hunting that I love. Great scope. It's one of their "AR" branded scopes.

What about 6.5CR? I have one in an AR pattern and shoots pretty light, is good for deer and good at distance. Barrels are typically good for 2-3k rounds. Would destroy a bunny though lol

It's one of their "AR" branded scopes. For long shots eg 200yrds plus yes i agree. But with the 5mm remington mag i have head shot many deer but all within 50yrds and the same would apply to whatever i replace it with. The 150-200yrd shooting would be only at rabbits and wild cats etc. As i have stated earlier i dont want the bigger, faster cals as i shoot in a reasonably built up area. Being a bowhunter for 50 years has taught me the advantages of being unseen and unheard and not desturbing the locals. Thank you for your comments mate, very much appreciated.

Up dateing the progress so far. No word from the Police and no word from the insurance company. Could be a few more weeks before the insurance company leaps ..................lurches into action. but i am not putting my life on hold for them. I have no venisen in the freezer ( I need my venisen fix) so i am going ahead with the replaceing my 5mm, asap. As you are aware i have asked for opinions and ideas about the right replacement. I thank you all for your help in suggestions. Ultimatly it came down to the 223 and the 204. I have decided to go with the 223 for several reasons. Although both are great flat shooters, the ammo costs and availability was the decider.. Most of you favored the 223 so i thank you for that. The make of rifle is now in the balance. The CZ is a great little rifle and i almost went with that. But yesterday i had a feel of the Tikka tx and man thats a real honey also. Will decide in the next few days. What do you guys think of them both?. The scope i settled on is the Meopta meostar 3-12 x56. Its a large scope but is well favored for its light gathering ability. So there you have it guys. I would love your opinion on the CZ or the Tikka.
